London Two - Surburbia Nil

Wednesday night sees action from the Champions League, FA Cup & Championship but we'll be concentrating on the latter two competitions as we're unwilling to get involved with Barcelona games for the most part & APOEL have created some real upset results so we're staying away from that too.

West Ham United are chasing hard for the title in the Championship & they look to be a quality outfit that should have too much for their visitors Watford on Wednesday night. West Ham have lost just once in their last 9 league games & have even manged to go two whole games without having a player sent off after seeing reds in three consecutive games! They looked wholly professional away to Cardiff on Sunday, playing patient football & taking their chances when they came & they have such a strong & deep squad that playing three days later should prove no problem. Watford have had a streaky look to their form since overcoming a really bad start to their season, going on little runs of defeats & then unbeaten sequences & although they started 2012 nicely they then took beatings from Crystal Palace & Southampton before an excellent comeback from two down to win 3-2 against Burnley on Saturday. Sam Allardyce's men aren't the kind of side to let opportunities slip like Burnley did though & with them facing the possibility of losing the 6 points they've gained against Portsmouth if they go out of the league they know they have to win games like this. With so many strikers to choose from plus Kevin Nolan & Mark Noble also offering plenty of goals it's difficult to envisage West Ham not scoring & with Watford being the league's 2nd lowest scorers away from home this should be comfortable, backing West Ham at 4/7 is very reasonable.

Tottenham Hotspur have been huffing & puffing in recent games & have just 8 points from their last 7 league games but they are rightly red hot favourites to beat League One side Stevenage in their 5th round FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane. Stevenage had been flying after an inauspicious start to the season & had built up a sequence of just one loss in 17 league games but they've since not managed to win in four, losing two of those & although they held what appeared to be an unprepared & lethargic Spurs side at home the same won't happen here. Stevenage have failed to score in 11 of their 32 league games & they won't see much of the ball in this one whoever Harry decides to start, their top scorer Chris Beardsley is also unlikely to be fit. Spurs have enough options to ensure the win here & they can do it without conceding, odds of 11/10 about Spurs winning to nil need to be backed.

Form Sides to be Followed in Midweek Flutter

With yet another successful weekend of football tipping behind us (Lay of Liverpool, Ipswich to win, Pogrebnyak to score first & Fulham to win by 2+ goals) we're now onto our favourite type of bets of games outside of the top flight with a full set of midweek matches. We're looking for value as always & have studied recent form & overall season form to come up with three selections for Tuesday night's games with two picks from League Two & one from the notoriously tough to get winners Championship.

Northampton Town are the side in 92nd place of the 92 sides in the 4 professional divisions & they host Bristol Rovers side at Sixfields in a game they'll feel they must win as their struggle against relegation from League Two gets more desperate. Both sides are improved recently although Northampton couldn't get worse after waiting 3 months between league wins & they've still only won 2 from their last 7 after allowing a 2 goal lead to drop against Cheltenham at the weekend where their in form striker Adebayo Akinfenwa scored again. Rovers dominated Macclesfield on Saturday but just couldn't break the deadlock & ended with a goalless draw, their strikers Matt Harrold & the veteran Scott McGleish are serviceable but could do with more support from midfield, a positive has been their young defender Lee Brown coming up with 6 goals so far in his first season at the club. With just one loss in 9 league games & 5 wins Bristol Rovers are a great bet at 2/1 to beat Aidy Bothroyd's men & to illustrate how good a price that is, they are as short as 11/8 with Coral!

Again in League Two Port Vale host Burton Albion at Vale Park, the hosts are just four points outside the playoff places whilst Burton are down in 15th position. Port Vale maybe facing financial difficulties off the pitch but on it they are in good form & unbeaten in their last seven league games with four wins & three draws, importantly their home record excluding those in the top six is very good with 7 wins from 10 games & only one defeat. Visitors Burton are having a poor second half of the season & haven't seen a victory since 26th December against bottom of the table Northampton. In 2012 they have lost 7 matches out of 10 & their last three games have all ended in 2-0 defeats. We expect Port Vale to be too strong for a Burton side who have a fragile confidence at odds of Evens with Paddy Power & Bet365.

To finish off our selections we're going for a bet that might not be original but should be as certain a result as you can get in the Championship with high flying Reading taking on the barely in existence Portsmouth at the Madejski Stadium. Reading had to travel to Millwall at the weekend & endure the hostile New Den atmosphere but picked up another win to make it 6 in a row & 11 from 13 league games & if they can keep going like this they'll have a genuine chance of automatic promotion. Reading tend to share their goals around but January signing from Blackburn, Jason Roberts has come in & made an impact with 3 in his first 6 & they've only conceded once in their last 6 meaning they'd be tough to beat for anyone let alone a struggling Portsmouth side. Pompey have lost 6 from their last 9 with just one win in that sequence & the noises from the administrators are not sounding great with a genuine possibility of them going out of business before the end of the season. With all that's hanging over them any team would want to be playing Portsmouth at the moment & we expect a thoroughly professional performance from Reading & they should be confidently backed at 1/2 to win here.

Beware the Pog!

There's a full day's worth of televised football on Sunday with the Tyne-Wear derby on ESPN, a heavyweight clash in the Championship between Cardiff & West Ham on the BBC & Sky showing Fulham v Wolves & then Spurs v Man United. We've had a look at the games to see if there are any decent prices available in an effort to follow up our 2 of 3 success on Saturday with a lay of Liverpool & backing Ipswich to beat Bristol City.

It seems to be becoming a weekly occurrence for us but we're yet again going to be opposing Wolverhampton Wanderers, this week the league's joint worst road defence face a Fulham side at Craven Cottage who have the most goals at home outside of the league's top 5. Fulham faced a challenging start to their season & took until their 7th game to register a win but they've been pretty good of late with just 2 losses from their last 9 league games & the 3 home defeats have come against good sides in Everton, Spurs & Man United & they've registered wins against much better sides than Wolves here including Arsenal, Liverpool & Newcastle. Wolves showed great resolve last week by coming back from 2-0 down against Newcastle to get a draw showing why they're the team with most points from losing positions but that stat tells a story as they are so often slow starters & that includes them scoring the least goals of any side in the opening 15 minutes of games. Caretaker boss Terry Connor looks to have a full squad to pick from apart from summer signing Jamie O'Hara but there is an inherent lack of quality at the back & in midfield that their decent strikeforce that includes Kevin Doyle & top scorer Steven Fletcher just can't make up for. Wolves have only won once in their last 12 & that run of results was inevitably going to lead to McCarthy's departure, it's difficult to see them improving on that here. This is just the type of game Fulham's players will enjoy & new signing Mahamadou Diarra could make his first start, he's got real quality & if he gets back to close to his best will prove invaluable, their other new signing Pavel Pogrebnyak has hit the ground running opening the scoring in the last two & could do again, he's on offer at 11/2 to do just that. Fulham's attacking threat is right across the midfield & forward line with their '3-D' attack of Duff, Dempsey & Dembele all able to help create & put away plenty of chances, we fancy them to beat Wolves by at least 2 clear goals & Fulham can be backed with a -1 goal start at odds of 7/4 with Stan James.

Looking at the other games today it's difficult to see any real value in the outright result prices but we think we've come up with an interesting double that doesn't require anyone being better than anyone else but would provide a very tidy payout. West Ham have the Championship's best away record but they have picked up 5 red cards in the league & Sam Allardyce doesn't appear to want them to curb that aggressive instinct at all. Cardiff haven't seen a red all season but the atmosphere should be red hot inside their stadium with this being such a big game & following on from their Wembley trip, in these kind of conditions tempers can flare & wild tackles can fly in & odds of 11/2 about a sending off look fair. We want to stick that bet in with a sending off in the Newcastle United v Sunderland derby where odds of 3/1 are available, neither side have had too many reds (Newcastle 2 & Sunderland 1) this season but you've always got a good chance of one with Lee Cattermole playing & this should be a real battle as it is every time these two teams meet. By putting these two bets together you can get odds of 25/1 with William Hill & it gives an interest plus a decent chance of a big payout off of small stakes.

Happy days for one Bristol side, Bad Times for the other

We were maybe a little ambitious with our Blackburn to beat Man City bet last week but at 18/1 it was a value pick & that's always in our mind when picking out bets, often it's not the biggest odds that offer value though as could be seen in midweek with an outstanding price of Evens on Charlton to beat rock bottom Chesterfield! We've got three picks this Saturday starting off early with the 12.45 kickoff in the Premier League between Carling Cup winners Liverpool & Champions League place chasers Arsenal, hopefully that can get us & you off to a nice start & more profitable football betting.

 (The arrival of Mark McGhee has seen an upturn in fortunes for Bristol Rovers)

In League Two, Bristol Rovers host Macclesfield Town at the Memorial Stadium. Rovers are in 16th place & eight points above Macclesfield. With the addition of Mark McGhee as manager Rovers have put together a fine run of form, in their last eight league matches they have won five, drawn two and suffered just one defeat away at 3rd place Shrewsbury Town. In this time they have built a strong defensive unit & have only conceded four goals, at home they are unbeaten in their last four having picked up two wins & two draws. Visitors Macclesfield are bottom of the form table having been beaten 8 times in their last 10 matches & only picking up two points & their away form has been dire all season with 12 defeats from 16 matches. We expect Bristol Rovers to run out comfortable winners against a poor Macclesfield side & provide punters with a 'weekend banker' at the odds of 4/6.

(Liverpool have just 4 wins from 12 home league games & Andy Carroll is hardly helping)

Liverpool take on inconsistent Arsenal at Anfield in the early kickoff on Saturday & there might be a temptation to think that their League Cup win will lead to them kicking on but the odds on offer of them winning this one are truly dreadful for a number of reasons. Liverpool have won just 4 of their 12 home league games & they have come against 3 relegation candidates in Bolton, Wolves & QPR plus an understrength Newcastle side. The Reds have won just 2 of 9 their last 9 league games & to put it bluntly really aren't that good & with captain & talisman Steven Gerrard injured on England duty they will undisputably be weakened. Arsenal are also coming off a morale boosting result with their extraordinary comeback in the North London derby over Spurs. The Gunners can't claim to be consistent but they eventually appear to have their first choice back 4 in place with Vermaelen & Sagna both fit & with Liverpool only scoring twice or more in 9 of their 25 games they might not be able to exploit Arsenal's greatest weakness. Liverpool are currently trading at around 2.1 (11/10) on Betfair & have to be a lay for anyone on the exchange at anything at 2.2 (5/4) or lower, their price is completely false when you look at their league form & lack of goals & it should be remembered they needed extra time & a penalty shootout to overcome a Championship side for that Cup win.

In the Championship, Ipswich Town entertain Bristol City at Portman Road, Ipswich are just below mid table whilst Bristol City have slipped towards the relegation places & are now only three points above the trap door. The Tractor Boys are having a disappointing season but had won four in a row before losing to the current form team Brighton last weekend. They impressively dished out hammerings to both West Ham & Cardiff City in these four wins; with ex-Premiership striker Michael Chopra bagging five goals. They are unbeaten in their last three home matches & have scored a impressive ten goals. Bristol City have really struggled in recent weeks & they current form reads five defeats in their last six matches. They are conceding goals at an alarming rate having conceded three times in four of their last five & away from home they haven't picked up any points on the road since December losing their last four, we can see Ipswich having too much firepower for a demoralised City side at a general price of 5/6.
